Recent Changes to the Layout

The recently added new fiddle yard can accomodate 16 rakes of stock for more varied operation.

Steeltown can be run in two different periods.

Running in 50s/60s livery

Steeltown is set in Co Durham in the 50/60s. The blast furnaces and rolling mills are working flat out and need a fast modern fleet to maintain the output.

Diesel is taking over from steam classes; 08s, 55s and works locos are employed on the layout but steam is still prevalent. The main line is diverted past the works and all manner of trains can be seen passing. The future is being planned with the finishing touches to the new overhead catenary. The old Steam MPD is closing and hopefully a preservation group will take it over.

Running in Modern Image

Set in Co Durham in modern times the blast furnaces and rolling mills are working flat out and need a fast modern fleet to maintain the output. Steeltown runs with most classes from O8s to 90s with 66s doing most of the freight. Passenger trains are provided by 125s and 225s, along with sprinters and 158s etc.

For those of you familiar with Walkerdale, Steeltown is its destination.

All Daves layouts were built for the pleasure of entertaining and in his creations he uses the policy ' throw away nowt and recycle owt'. If you see this layout at a show, please feel free to ask any questions.

On Steeltown, Dave Walker has recreated the atmosphere of the heavy industry of the time. A remarkable aspect of this layout is its intensive use of discarded materials to portray the structures of a large steelworks. This layout has been exhibited on a number of occasions around the country and has won best in show at Skipton and at Shildon
